Overview of Characteristics and Future Development Trends of Lithium Titanate Batteries

Lithium titanate battery is a type of lithium-ion battery that uses lithium titanate as the positive electrode material. It has the characteristics of high safety, strong stability, fast charging and discharging speed, long cycle life, and wide working temperature range, which are mainly manifested in the following aspects:

1. Safety and stability

The potential of lithium titanate ion batteries is higher than that of metallic lithium, making it less prone to lithium dendrite formation and stable discharge voltage, thus improving the safety performance of lithium batteries. After testing, it was found that lithium titanate batteries do not smoke, ignite, or explode under harsh tests such as needle punching, squeezing, and short circuiting, and their safety is much higher than other lithium batteries.

2. Fast charging and discharging

Compared with carbon negative electrode materials, lithium titanate batteries have a higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient and can achieve high-speed charging and discharging. While significantly reducing charging time, it has little impact on cycle life and strong thermal stability. Lithium titanate batteries can be fully charged in about ten minutes. The chemical diffusion coefficient of lithium titanate (usually 2 × 10-8cm2/s) is one order of magnitude larger than that of carbon negative electrode materials. The high diffusion coefficient endows lithium titanate batteries with the ability to charge and discharge faster and with longer cycles than other carbon negative electrode materials.

3. Long cycle life

Ordinary lithium-ion batteries have about 1000-2000 cycles, while lithium titanate batteries have 10000-20000 cycles. Lithium titanate batteries have the longest lifespan and high safety among lithium batteries.

4. Wide working temperature range

The three-dimensional spinel structure of lithium titanate batteries has unique three-dimensional lithium ion diffusion channels, so compared with other lithium batteries, lithium titanate batteries also have better high and low temperature characteristics. It can be charged and discharged normally at temperatures between minus 50 ℃ and 60 ℃. Whether in the cold north or the hot south, vehicle batteries are not affected by temperature, eliminating users' worries.

The low-temperature discharge characteristics are particularly suitable for military products, aerospace industry, polar scientific research, medical equipment, and other extremely cold application fields that have special requirements for low-temperature performance.

For electric vehicle energy, the reliability and durability of batteries are crucial. Due to its high safety, stability, long lifespan, and environmental friendliness, lithium titanate batteries will undoubtedly become the new generation of lithium-ion batteries, widely used in new energy vehicles, electric motorcycles, and high-end application fields that require high safety, flexibility, high stability, and long lifespan.
